Lt. Macaulay Lamude Condemned for Killing unarmed Igbo
The New York Times of September 2, 1968 filled the following report on the Igbo son murdered by Nigerian army officer: It is reproduced below exactly as it appeared on page 316 in the book, The Untold Story of the Nigerian-Biafran War by Dr. Luke Aneke.
********************************************************
The Nigerian government announced today the condemnation to death of a Nigerian army lieutenant who shot and killed an unarmed and handcuffed Biafran POW. The announcement did not give the condemned man’s name, but it was reliably learned by journalists that he was Lt. Macaulay Lamude, the officer who shot and killed a young Igbo at Ogwe after its capture by Nigerian troops last Tuesday, August 27.
The shooting incident was witnessed and photographed by American and British reporters and camera crew. Their reports led to the court martial for “conduct unbecoming of an officer.”
